Blockchain Foundations
From inception, it has been clear that for players to become deeply invested in the journey of re-civilizing the cosmos, they must trust that their decisions - how they spend their time and what they choose to build - will have lasting consequences. This requires balancing two opposing forces:
A level of certainty and predictability on the persistence of the foundations of the world.
For example, the transition from the Digital Physics of the game to “Immutable Physics of the Cosmos”.
A belief in the unconstrained potential and possibility to extend and shape the Frontier.
For example, the modularity, composability, and extendibility of Smart Assemblies.
Thus, we quickly recognized that blockchain's public, distributed, and immutable properties perfectly align with our objectives for EVE Frontier. Blockchain technology not only ensures the unchanging and transparent foundation of the world but also fosters an open environment for composability, allowing continuous iteration and improvement upon what has been built before.
More specifically, we ultimately see EVE Frontier as an Ethereum-based application, leveraging the chain's strong balance between security and decentralization. However, as highlighted by the Blockchain Trilemma, Ethereum is not yet designed for scale. For context, Ethereum currently handles around 1.3 million transactions per day—barely enough to support EVE Online’s Market System, which averages 1 million daily transactions, let alone EVE Online’s Total World State, which processes roughly 1 billion transactions per day.
In response to these limitations, we have adopted a pragmatic approach, experimenting with various strategies to build the autonomous world we envision. Initially, we worked with an Ethereum sidechain before developing our own Layer 2 scaling solution on Optimism’s OP Stack. Looking ahead, our next phase of testing will explore Redstone, another Layer 2 solution built on the OP Stack and focused on the deployment of Autonomous Worlds. We will continue to evolve our blockchain strategy, adapting to the needs of the Frontier and its community as the technology progresses and as more of the game’s fundamental logic is enshrined on-chain.
